The Golden Fabric Once Used as Currency: Silk

Silk. I know, I wrote about it previously, but this fabric has so much history and value that one article would not do it justice. For so long it was out of reach of the common person that facsimiles were created, like nylon and polyester. However, while at a distance it may look similarly, look closely and it will not fool anyone. Plus, it’s not breathable nor comfortable to the touch.

Lei Zu, who was the wife of the Yellow Emperor Huangdi, discovered silk after a cocoon dropped into her tea, and, as she attempted to pull it out, silk thread unraveled. Whether the story is true or not, Lei Zu is now known as the Goddess of Silkworms.

The oldest silk ever found came from China and was dated to about 3630 BC. The Emperor of China and his wife wore silk, choosing between white and yellow, depending on the occasions. If that doesn’t show its value, it was even used as currency.

In 202 BC, the Tang Dynasty, established the Silk Road. 800 years later, it created a financial and taxation system that used coins and silk as currency, due its value, rarity and demand. Traders knew they could barter silk for other goods, and it would be accepted, with a pretty steady conversion rate.

By the 6th century, silk weaving came to Persia. It took some time for Persian silk to develop its own patterns rather than copy established Chinese patterns. It would take until the 1100s before silk production was established in Europe.

Some amazing properties of silk:

1.      Silk has a hypoallergenic nature. That means a person with sensitive skin can wear it comfortably.

2.      It is extremely soft and pleasant to the touch. No wonder silk pillowcases and sheets are so popular for a good night’s sleep and romantic occasions.

3.      Silk naturally repels mold and mildew, meaning it will stay fresh longer than most other natural fabrics.

4.      A silk rope is stronger than an equally thick metal wire and is difficult for insects to penetrate. It is probably the strongest natural fiber known to man.

5.      Silk absorbs moisture. It will cool you down; a perfect choice for hot days.

6.      Because of its nature, it is perfect for travel: easy to care for and light weight, and they don’t take much space in luggage.

I always choose silk for its quality, luxurious and flawless look, and the fact that it will never go out of fashion. You can wear this textile gold and feel special, stylish and luxurious, making you the envy of those who look at you.
