Nature’s Luxury Fabric: Silk
Since the beginning of time, certain things were considered of such luxury and status that only royalty and noble dignitaries could enjoy them. Items like grapes, which were considered the food of kings, or purple fabric, for its scarcity and hardships of acquiring the dye from the sea. Silk was in this category.
Silk was another royal item. Long sought after for its luminous quality, as silk reflects light and produces beautiful colors, but it was hard to attain. While many insects create silk, not all silk was viable for textile. The silk produced by moth larvae was common and popular for its quality.
The most precious and sought after was from China. It was so scarce to the rest of the world that most Kings, Emperors and Caesars wore silk-cotton or silk-linen blends. This was so until the third century, when Emperor Elagabalus (also known as Heliogabalus) was the first Roman to wear 100% pure silk clothing, according to Wikipedia.
Today, with modern technology, silk has become more affordable and available to the masses. It still carries the status of luxury. It’s smooth texture, soft to the skin, makes it a joy to wear. It’s ability to make colors more vibrant, has designers the world over wanting to create their fashion with it.
From ascots for men to unisex silk scarves; from shirts to blouses, and from sheets to pillowcases and handkerchiefs; silk is versatile and beautiful.
I remember when polyester was very popular in the 70’s and 80’s. A cheap, oil-based fabric that would try and mimic silk. Polyester products flew off the shelves and people learned quickly – it was no silk.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Polyester has it’s uses, can be tasteful and has come a long way in quality. Today’s polyester is not your parent’s polyester; however, silk has no equal when it comes to the sumptuousness, opulence and comfort.
And, it’s not just for high fashion anymore! While a silk ascot looks fabulous with the perfect sports jacket, or a silk scarf with the perfect dress or suit, it looks exquisite with a pair of jeans or shorts, a comfortable shirt and loafers or boat shoes.
This holiday season give the gift of a silk. It’s not only tasteful, it shows class and that you care. A gift that’s under $100 will look far more expensive and be highly appreciated by the discerning fashion aficionado in your life.
Let them know they are special and can dress like a Caesar. Let them be your royalty with a gift of silk.
